A Multiple Choice Element automates the selection of one or more answers from the Interactions displayed on the Lesson screen.  To operate correctly, there must be two or more interactions in the Interaction list.

When you select the Element type from the button bar of the Lesson dialog you are offered either a blank Multiple Choice Element or if you select it from Elements storage the element will contain pre-defined Actions, Interactions and Responses.

Information tab

See The INFORMATION tab and The Action Toolbar for details about adding Actions in the Information tab.

You should ensure that the information given to the trainee gives clear instructions about selecting an answer and, if appropriate, that more than one answer may be correct.  There should also be an instruction as to what the trainee should do when they have finished selecting their answer(s), in order to move to the Response part of the Element.  See Response processing for more information about moving the lesson to the Response section.

For example, a question with four answer options and a Next button displayed, might have the instruction:
Please select your answer(s), then click Next to continue.

There may be more than one correct answer.

Interaction tab

The Interaction tab contains the Interaction list (see The Interaction Toolbar  for more information) as well as properties that are specific to a Multiple Choice element.

The specific properties of a Multiple Choice dialog allow you to select the number of choices and the number of possible answers that you are interested in.  It also allows you to automate the correct response by selecting which values will be set as 'correct'.

Number of answers

Select the number of correct answers from the Answers dropdown list.

Correct answer(s)

The Correct answer(s) check boxes correspond with the Value properties of the Interactions in the Interaction List of the Element. Checking a check box will specify that the Interaction that has its value property set to the caption of the check box will be designated as correct.

For example: if you check Check box A, the Interaction that has its Value property set to A will be designated as a correct answer.

Any click / Any key

The Any click and Any key checkboxes allow you to specify that if the trainee clicks the mouse button, or presses a key on the keyboard, then the Element will move to the Response conditions.

Timeout

The Timeout checkbox and field allow you to set that if a specified time (in seconds) passes and the trainee has not selected any actions on the screen then the element will move to the Response section.  You can test for timeout (IF TIMEOUT) as one of the Response conditions.

Multiple Choice with multiple answers

You can specify that a Multiple Choice Element have more than one correct answer.

When using multiple choice questions with multiple answers, make sure the Choices and Answers drop-downs are set correctly.  For multiple answers you must use  Custom Buttons (with the Button Type set to Toggle) or Checkbox fields.

The Any click and Any key checkboxes must be left blank if multiple answers are correct.

Response tab

When defining the Response section of the Element you can use the CORRECT and INCORRECT System variables to determine if the buttons the trainee has pressed have been designated as correct answers - see Correct answer(s) on the Interaction tab displayed above.

See The RESPONSE tab  for more information.
